Squires School the Academy

Thursday the Cave Spring Girls Soccer team put on a clinic in their season opener against Central Academy.  Before the night was over, the Squires walked away with a dominant performance and a decisive 5-0 victory.

Lesson number one: how to score early and often.  Only two minutes into the first half, Catherine Thacker sent a hard ball from the right side across the mouth of the goal, where Kaylin Grahame was crashing on the far side.  Within the next 10 minutes, Cave Spring found the net two more times.  The second half started in similar fashion.  Only three minutes in, Lauren Pennington forced a hard shot past the Academy keeper on a nice assist from Aubrey Billings.  The Squires would add another one before calling it a day at five goals scored.

Class was also in session on the topic of superb defending.  Try as they might to pass around the defense or muscle their way through, the Squires’ stout back line would not give in.  Central Academy could only muster one shot on goal the entire match.  Cave Spring loves it when their goal keepers are bored.

Want to know how to dominate possession?  The Squires have a plethora of midfielders who can teach you.  Aggressive to the ball, working it in and out, passing it wide or through, these girls demonstrated how to connect one end of the field to the other.

Perhaps the most important lesson of the night, Cave Spring showed how to play as a Team.  The five goals were scored by five different players.  By the end of the fifth quarter, eight girls were involved in the scoring.  Ten Squires held down the back line.  Twelve manned the midfield.  The entire Cave Spring roster made it on the field and contributed to the “schooling”.

Next up for the Squires is arch-nemesis Read Mountain.  From this writer’s perspective, it appears Cave Spring has studied hard and will be ready for the test.
