The Value of “Team”

Every year you will hear Girls Soccer Coach, Tim Harris, preach the same thing.  “I will take good players with real team spirit over a group of individual superstars any day,” says Harris.  “A team that is truly a team will not only win, they will have more fun and leave a lasting impression along the way.”

It appears someone may be listening.

The Squires have started well.  3 wins, 2 ties, 0 losses.  Four shutouts in five games.  Only 1 goal allowed so far.  The hot start includes a couple firsts in Coach Tim’s six-year tenure at CSMS: the girls’ first tie to Andrew Lewis and first victory over Read Mountain – two powerhouses when it comes to girls soccer in the valley.

But it’s not just the wins and ties that stand out; it’s the way the team has gone about their business.  The Squires have a flair for the exciting, close game.  Only one match has finished with a goal differential of more than 1.  Yet the girls seem to keep their composure in every situation.  Whatever the team has been working on in practice seems to find it’s way into the game.  That’s called “coachability”, and the Squires seem to have it in large quantities.

Cave Spring is developing into a team that is truly better than the sum of it’s parts.  There’s no single “hero” who is carrying the group.  Everyone does their part and to the best of their ability.  They are “all for one” and “one for all”.  Whether its the 1st half or the 5th quarter, it is common to hear the girls cheering each other on.  If someone is down on themselves, or just down in general, one or more of the girls will pick them up.  There’s a lot of unselfishness.  After allowing their only goal of the season, just about everyone on the field said it was their fault and not the fault of their team mates.  (How refreshing!)  Just before the start of a recent 5th quarter, one player gave up her spot on the field because she felt another girl had played less in the regular game than her.  (Now that just brings a tear to your eye!)

It’s impossible to say how this team will finish.  There’s still a lot of season left.  But, if they continue on their current path – the path of building a real “team” – it will indeed be a special season.

Squires Start Strong

Ah, the first game of a new season.  Filled with excitement.  Fraught with uncertainty.  How will we do this year?  Are we up to the challenges?  Wasn’t it snowing just a week or two ago?

The challenge facing the 2015 version of Cave Spring girls soccer was perennial powerhouse, Andrew Lewis Middle School.  The team who gave the Squires a 9-0 drubbing the year before, who had outscored Cave Spring 21-1 the past three years, who had handed CSMS five straight years of losses.  Yes, that Andrew Lewis.

Ah, but this is a new season.

Soon the Squires would not only put their first game on the books, but they would also log their first ever tie against Andrew Lewis and their first shutout.  The 8 shots on goal allowed were a full 20 less than last year’s match up.  With each shot, goal keeper Katie Harris made the save.  With each Wolverine attacking run, the Squire’s stout defense would shut them down and turn them away.  Defenders Emma Dmochowski, Rachael Snodgrass and the “Tay Sisters”, Taylor Robertson and Tayler Schindler, displayed a bend-but-don’t-break attitude which kept the home crowd on the edge of their seats.  So many corner kicks.  So many Squires turning the ball out and up the field.

Ah, it is indeed a new season.

Cave Spring’s attack made several decent runs.  Casey Fentress (1) and Megan Doyle (2) managed a few shots on frame.  Too many through-ball opportunities were just a little too late, though.  The team showed the promise of good ball possession, and a great deal of composure.  A little more experience together can only mean the best is yet to come for the Squires.

We believe in ourselves.  Next challenge, please.  Ah, don’t you just love the possibilities a new season presents?
