Rising Above Luck

Vernon “Lefty” Gomez, Major League pitcher from 1930 – 1943, was often known to say “I’d rather be lucky than good.” His first year in the big leagues, Gomez only won 2 games and had a high Earned Run Average.  He was 6 foot 2 inches tall, but weighed only 155 pounds.  Yet Lefty rose above the poor start and being “too skinny” to make the most of  his opportunities and talent.  By the time his career was over, Vernon “Lefty” Gomez was a 5-time World Series winner, 7-time All-Star, and twice led the league in Wins, Strike Outs and Earned Run Average. [1]  Maybe Lefty should have said, “I’d rather be lucky AND good.”

In the past two Cave Spring girls soccer matches the shots on goal were 14-3 and 12-2.  One would assume a double-digit shot differential means a lopsided victory for the top-shooting team.  Nope.  Both games were won by just one goal.  In the first game, the Squires beat William Byrd 2-1, despite out-shooting the Terriers 14-3.  Just unlucky, I guess.  Cave Spring also won the second game, edging out Andrew Lewis 1-0.  But this time they were the ones with only 2 shots.  Were they just lucky?

If it was “luck”, it was the kind Thomas Jefferson spoke of when he said, “I’m a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it.”[2]  Cave Spring worked hard to create those 14 goal-scoring opportunities against Byrd.  And they rose above a bouncing ball on a difficult playing surface to find the net just enough to win.  The Squires were also more than just lucky when they defeated Andrew Lewis for the first time in seven years.  A lot of hard work went into that win.  Goal-keeper Lexi Miller worked hard diving after shots to save them before they could reach the net.  Catherine Thacker worked hard to chase down an Andrew Lewis attacker on a break-away, arriving just in time to block the shot.  Chloe Lane worked hard to aggressively challenge opposing outside mids, taking hard drives to the body and her head.  Center back Aubrey Billings worked hard, over and over, to stop anything in the box and send the ball sailing back to our own attackers.  Kieera Mooney worked hard to cover lots of ground in the midfield, connecting defense to offense, without a rest the entire game.  Megan Doyle worked hard to find just enough room around the Lewis defender to get off a rocket shot for the game’s only goal.  I could continue on, as each of the Squires contributed their own hard work and talent to an exciting game.

So, if this is luck, “I say luck is when an opportunity comes along and you’re prepared for it.” (Denzel Washington) [3]

Very good game. Could have scored several more, as we created opportunities and kept Byrd out of our box.

The Lesson

I don’t like to lose.

It’s not just losing.  I also don’t like letting people down or making mistakes.  I get angry when life is unfair.  I get frustrated when things are harder than I think they should be.  Absolutely none of this is realistic.  Somehow this doesn’t stop me from wanting to be better or striving to be the best.

Funny thing.  When I look back on my hardest days, I realize these were the times I grew the most.  Like the day the doctor told me I had cancer and a 51% chance of being alive in ten years.  You can feel sorry for yourself.  You can give up.  Or you can learn to have the proper perspective on life and what’s really important.  That was eleven years ago.  Those lessons made it easier to face prostate cancer surgery a year ago, or when the cancer came back and I had to go through radiation treatments.  That was three weeks ago.

Eventually you figure out every difficulty is an opportunity to grow.  Every exposed weakness is a chance to get stronger.  Every loss is really a lesson to be learned.

The final score of Monday’s game was Read Mountain 3, Cave Spring 0.  But we didn’t really lose.  We learned Lexi Miller can save us at least 11 times a game.  We learned we are still faster than the other team’s backs, and our backs are faster than their forwards.  We learned we miss our team mates when they can’t play.  We learned we need to stay positive when things get hard.  We learned we have to keep working on our ball control skills.  We learned that, except for an unlucky ricochet and a kick to our keeper’s face, this could have been a 1 goal game.

The truth is: Our team never loses.  We either win or we learn.

Squires Play to Strength

Strong.  The single word that best describes Cave Spring’s first 2016 girls soccer game is this: Strong.   You want scoring?  How about 5 goals on 22 shots?  Yep, that’s strong.  You want defense?  How about a shutout and only allowing 1 shot on goal?  Doesn’t get much stronger than that.

What stood out most about this performance, however, was not the awesome results; but the way in which it was accomplished.  The Squires played to their strengths.  In short, they did what they do best.  And so, by focusing on their strengths, it almost looked like they had no weaknesses.

“What, pray tell, are this team’s strengths?”, you may ask.

Defense.  The Squire’s back line shut down Central Academy’s attack before it could even get started.  The few times they actually made it into Cave Spring’s defensive third, it wasn’t long before the ball came flying out again.  After awhile the CAMS forwards probably felt like they were playing against a kick-back net or the brick wall on the back of their house.

Aggressiveness.  Cave Spring is loaded with girls who will run through you or over the top of you, if necessary, in order to get the ball.  No fear.  All out.  “It’s my ball and you can’t have it!”  As a result, the Squires won most every 50/50 ball.  Along the way, they left a few opposing players players on the ground or wondering what just happened.

Speed.  Given half a chance, there are girls on this team who will flat outrun you to the goal.  To counter this, CAMS back line stayed well within their half of the field.  They even tried to execute the “offsides trap” in order to slow the Squires down.  Undaunted, Cave Spring used their speed to get the ball through the midfield quickly and to their forwards.  The forwards, in turn, used speed to dribble past the defenders and in for a shot.

Enthusiasm.  With each good play, the rest of the Cave Spring squad would cheer on their team mates.  At times the entire bench seemed to explode with support for a job well done on the field, jumping up, arms raised, loud, excited.  These girls are clearly having fun.  And they are doing it as a team – all for one; one for all.  It doesn’t matter if you’ve been playing travel soccer since you were a young child, or this is your first time ever setting foot on a soccer field.  Everyone get’s praise for what they bring to the team and their success on the field.  It’s an enthusiasm that’s contagious – and results in a strong, cohesive unit.

Keep playing to your strengths, Cave Spring.  It will take you far.
