Climb Every Mountain

The girls soccer team at Cave Spring had a good week to start the month of April.  And it was like the Sound of Music to this reporter’s ears.

On Wednesday, the Squires climbed a big Mountain.  They enjoyed the experience so much, they decided to Climb Every Mountain.  So they did it again on Thursday.

In Wednesday’s match, Cave Spring found themselves down 1-0 early.  Undeterred, the girls said to themselves “I Have Confidence” and clawed their way back to 1-1 by half time.  For 24 minutes of the second half, neither team could find the net.  But the Squires Must Have Done Something Good, because the referee called a foul inside the box in the final minute.  One penalty kick later, Cave Spring came away with a 2-1 victory.

The very next day, on the very same field against the very same opponent, the weather took a turn for the worse.  The wind was blowing so hard it was knocking all the flower petals off the Edelweiss. Cave Spring had to play against the wind in the first half.    Since the Squires back line rarely allows even a shot on goal, goalkeeper Megan Eller usually plays the role of The Lonely Goatherd.  However, today she had to make several good saves, keeping the game within reach. Cave Spring’s defense held strong, but finally gave up a goal late.

The Squires midfielders had to keep running like a Deer, A Female Deer, to keep up with their counter-attacking opponents.  Early in the second half, one of these mids, Ella Ray, was a Drop of Golden Sun when she worked an assist to Catherine Thacker for her 16th goal of the year.  But Catherine was not done yet.  She said “I Am 16 Going On 17”, then promptly scored her 17th of the year to put Cave Spring up by one.  Afterward, one team mate was heard to exclaim that these two goals were A Few Of My Favorite Things.

But with Raindrops Falling on the Roses, and the cold air making everyone wish for Warm Woolen Mittens, there were still 15 minutes left to play before everyone could say So Long, Farewell to this match.  How Do You Solve A Problem Like this?  You just keep clearing the ball with the wind at your back and hope the clock runs out.

Of course the clock did run out and the girls soccer team at Cave Spring ended a good week with two identical 2-1 wins.  Then they drove off into countryside and lived happily ever after.
